What is Addiction?

Addiction happens when using a substance or engaging in a behavior becomes hard to control—even when it causes harm. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or lifestyle.

Some common signs of addiction include:

  • Using more of a substance than intended
  • Feeling unable to cut back or stop
  • Spending lots of time getting, using, or recovering from a substance
  • Cravings or urges that feel hard to ignore
  • Trouble at work, school, or in relationships because of use
  • Physical withdrawal symptoms if you try to stop
